A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply for IELTS Exam

A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply for IELTS Exam

Since 1980, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has been globally recognised, reflecting English proficiency, especially among non-native English speakers.

Because of its popularity, most well-established multinational institutions and companies seek IELTS qualifications from aspiring applicants from various countries. That means they consider English competence part of the standardised qualifications, opening the doors to success.

However, the application process for IELTS is not as simple as it appears. That is why City Language Centre provides you with a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the IELTS exam.

IELTS Application Guide

You can apply for the IELTS exam in a variety of ways. However, City Language Centre has infused the essential aspects to guide you from preparation to registration.

You can find more information below:

It is crucial to consider the type of IELTS test you want to take, and this should be based on where you want to go and what you want to do. Simply put, the type of test should correspond to your objectives.

As a head start, most IELTS tests include the following two exams:

  • IELTS Academic
    Based on its name, this is required if you want to begin your studies or career in one of the following fields:
    Higher education in an English-speaking city
    Professional registration in an Anglosphere country, such as teacher, doctor, etc

    The test evaluates your English skills in four areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Except for the reading and writing tests, which are distinct, these skillsets are nearly identical to those of IELTS General Training.

  • IELTS General Training
    If you want to continue your secondary education or seek work experience and training programs in an English-speaking country, this is for you.
    In addition, when you take IELTS General Training, you will also improve in the following areas:
    Conversational English;
    Language skills in a realistic everyday context;
    and English competency for migration to the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia.

Every institution and company has a unique set of IELTS requirements for their students and employees. They vary based on the course and profession you are planning to get.

For example, in most Australian cities, aspiring English teachers must have a high level of English proficiency. Your IELTS Academic band score should be at least 7.0 in reading and writing and 8.0 in speaking and listening.

While this is true in most cities, it is still critical to clarify your desired employer’s or academic institution’s qualifications.

Without preparation, you might feel overwhelmed about the English test. Thus, it is essential to practice your English competency to identify your strengths and weaknesses, laying the groundwork for IELTS exam success.

And City Language Centre recognises the importance of preparation on how to apply for IELTS exam. That is why we are proud to offer our IELTS Preparation course to students who want to ace their exams.

Both IELTS types allow you to take the exam on a computer or paper, with reading, listening, and writing skills.

On the other hand, the speaking test remains the same. This skill requires you to complete the test with a face-to-face interview with an examiner to analyse your linguistic competence carefully.

Regardless of the difference, it is vital to check the test location where you intend to take your exam. Some testing centres only provide one of the two options; IELTS on computer or IELTS on paper.

There are nearly 50 IELTS test locations in Australia, including Canberra’s IDP Education. Every testing centre has its calendar of test dates, which you can easily browse online, so be prepared to book your IELTS exam date using the calendar of your preferred location.

However, since the start of the pandemic’s outbreak, there have been activities adapted to comply with the health protocol:

  • Learning about the locations that provide computer-delivered testing;
  • Getting reminders about your scheduled test date and time;
  • Knowing more about what to expect on test day, such as whether you must be fully vaccinated or if the first dose is sufficient; and
  • Clarifying about the dos and don’ts during the exam.

Always double-check your application results. You will receive written confirmation of your scheduled date and time to your designated email address.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here is a detailed list of what is included in your booking information:

  • Testing Date
  • Location
  • Registration Period
  • Start Time

However, it is important to note that the process for paper-based application forms takes at least 5-10 days to be confirmed.

Put your mind in a calm state now that you’ve prepared for your exam. When you are relaxed, you can think more clearly and avoid nervousness. As a result, you will gain more confidence and access to your memory of what you have learned.

So, here are a few things you can do to unwind the week or day before an exam:

  • Meditate;
  • Reduce Caffeine Consumption;
  • Enjoy Soothing Music;
  • Reduce Sugar Consumption;
  • Walk with Nature; and
  • Go to Sleep.

You can do these things, but what works best for you is the most beneficial type of comfort. Thus, go ahead and do what you want.
