4 Ways to Pass the IELTS Exam

Preparing for a test can be stressful. That is why City Language Centre has put together a list of helpful ways to get you started.

The IELTS test in Melbourne is not your typical test with multiple-choice questions. Instead, it is divided into four sections of macro skills, each with a different test format.

So, what can you expect from each part? Read more below.

Listening

This first macro skill focuses on how accurately you receive and interpret messages, making it a factor in effective communication. Here’s an example of how an IELTS listening test is divided into four sections:

  1. Section One is a two-person social conversation. It is one of the more manageable parts, as the speakers tend to speak slowly and with lots of pausing. In this section, you should concentrate on the facts presented by the two speakers.
  2. Section Two is a monologue about daily social situations. The speaker may speak slowly, but pausing is minimal.
  3. Section Three is a discussion between two or more people. It will help if you concentrate because of the speakers’ fast-paced speaking compared to the first sections.

Reading

The second macro skill is designed to assess a wide range of reading skills through quick comprehension and time management efficiency. This section will be divided into three parts, each with a different passage from a journal, book, newspaper, or magazine.

Writing

It evaluates your skills on how your write with relevance, organisation, and the scope of your vocabulary and grammar fluency.

Speaking

It usually takes 11 to 14 minutes of your time. This section portrays more interaction relating to a real-life situation. The speaking test involves a conversation with a certified examiner in the IELTS Speaking test. Aside from that, all your answers will be recorded.

The Week Before

First, thoroughly read your booking confirmation email. Then double-check the date, time, and location of your exam. After determining the exact venue, figure out how to get there quickly. Will it require a long ride or a quick walk? Whatever it is, make sure that your transportation will be available on the exam day.

Aside from your ride, make sure you have the following items ready:

  • Correct ID, such as your passport or national ID;
  • A clear and transparent water bottle;
  • Pencil and eraser;
  • Snacks; and
  • Photographs.

The Examination Day

Make sure to arrive early. Most IELTS test centres do not allow late arrivals. In some cases, you must still re-register for the test and pay the test fee.

When you arrive at the venue, the following is expected of every candidate:

  • You eat before the exam because food is not permitted on the exam grounds.
  • You must bring recent passport-size photographs.
  • Prepare your physical self for the possibility of being photographed on the day.
  • Place your pencil, eraser, and identification on your desk. Note: The IELTS practitioner might give a pencil and eraser. Still, make sure to bring one.
  • Raise your hand silently if you require assistance or want to use the restroom.
  • On the listening test, make sure you can hear the conversation. If not, notify them right away. Remember that you only have ten minutes to answer the question after you’ve finished listening.
  • Ensure that you complete the test.
  • Don’t get up unless you’re told to.

Day or Week After the Test

This is the time to unwind after a job well done. You deserve to eat your favourite meal or drink your favourite soda after weeks or months of hard work.

After giving yourself some time, sit back, and wait for the results in 13 days.
